Stainless steel autoclave with a capacity of 24L equipped with a pressure gauge and a timer to control the sterilization time at 15 PSI. The 6 bolts on its cover provide a perfect seal. It is also equipped with a tap to drain excess water after sterilization as well as a safety valve that is automatically triggered if the pressure becomes too high.

Note that the pressure gauge indicates the pressure in megapascals (Mpa). 0.1 Mpa is therefore the minimum pressure level to be reached by the mycologist (example in video) because it corresponds to approximately 15 PSI.

An autoclave is a sealed metal container, designed to withstand high pressures. It is used for sterilization by destroying microbial germs. In the context of mushroom cultivation, the autoclave is essential to ensure a sterile environment conducive to the growth of the mycelium.

Use in mushroom cultivation

1. Substrate Sterilization: Autoclaving sterilizes the substrate (such as straw, sawdust, or vermiculite) before inoculating the mycelium. Sterilization eliminates any bacterial or fungal contamination, thus ensuring an environment conducive to mushroom growth.

2. Mycelium on grain: If you are growing mycelium on grain (e.g. cereals like rye), the autoclave is used to sterilize the bags containing the grains. This allows the mycelium to grow without competition from unwanted microorganisms.

3. Agar Preparation: Agar is a gel used to grow mycelium samples. Autoclaving sterilizes the agar bottles, ensuring a clean medium for mycelium growth.
